Last year, worldwide electric vehicle (EV) sales were estimated at 3.2 million units. It is more than 100,000 units higher than originally expected. New car sales surged, and major markets around Europe showed recovery, driving overall growth.

On the 19th, market research firm EV Volumes announced that last year, global electric vehicles (pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, hydrogen vehicles) sales volume will record more than 3.2 million units. Compared to 2019, when 2.62 million units were sold, the sales volume increased by 600,000 units. The annual sales volume of 3 million units could have been difficult due to the corona 19 effect in the first half, but the new car effect appeared in the second half and it rebounded successfully.

The sales volume in December was 580,000 units, the highest annually. Sales in major European countries, including Germany, increased from the previous month. In particular, sales in the Netherlands increased three times from the previous month and two times in Spain. The United States also showed a recovery trend with a 35% increase.

Among European countries, Germany sold 390,000 units per year, surpassing the United States (320,000 units), and ranked second in the world. In Denmark and Italy, sales volume increased by more than 200% in 2020 compared to 2019. The rest of the major European countries also grew by more than 100%. Among non-European countries, Korea was the 14th highest. Last year, 58,000 electric vehicles were sold. In terms of growth, it was 50% compared to 2019.

EV Volumes explained, “The market has responded to the launch of new electric vehicles in earnest. It is also the reason that the automakers increased their sales at the end of the year to avoid the European Union’s carbon emission regulation.” The Volkswagen ID.3 went on sale in September. In December, 7144 units were sold in Germany alone, and the cumulative sales volume reached 15,140 units. The total cumulative sales volume is 54,300 units.

The Fiat 500e, which has been sold since November, also recorded 6288 units. These models were sold only in Europe in 2020. When the global launch is made this year, more sales are expected than last year.

As new car sales from major electric car makers increase, Korean battery makers’ earnings are expected to improve significantly. Both the ID.3 and 500e are equipped with LG Energy Solution batteries. Renault ZOE also uses LG batteries. Hyundai Motor Company used SK innovation batteries for Kona EV, which is produced at the Nosovice plant in Czech Republic.
