59% drop in airport users last year... First decline in 12 years after the financial crisis

Last year, when Corona 19 hit the world, passengers at 15 airports in Korea declined for the first time in 12 years after the global financial crisis.

According to the National Statistical Portal of the National Statistical Office on the 1st, the number of passengers at 15 airports nationwide last year was 65,277,63.

This is a decrease of 9,2646,000,381 (58.8%) from the previous year (15,7673,444).

This is the first time in 12 years since 2008, at the time of the financial crisis, that the number of airport users has decreased from the previous year.

In 2008, the number of airport users at the time was 6995,2693, a decrease of 11.84,736 (1.7%) from the previous year.

However, as the economy recovered and the number of overseas travelers increased, airport users continued to increase for 11 consecutive years from 2009 to 2019.

Accordingly, the number of airport users from 70 million in 2009 exceeded 80 million in 2010 and 90 million in 2012, and then surpassed 100 million in 2014.

However, the number of airport passengers last year dropped to 60 million again, only 14 years ago in 2006 (667639,000,679).

By month, until January, when the first coronavirus confirmed in Korea, the number of airport users was 13,537,302, a slight increase from the same month of the previous year (13.29,511), maintaining the previous year’s level.

However, in February, the number of airport users plunged to 706 million, and in March, when the first corona spread in Korea began, it finally fell to 2 million.

In the following April, the number of airport passengers decreased to 2.57 million, reaching a monthly minimum.

This is only one-fifth of the same month last year (1,301,518,518).

After that, as the spread of the corona somewhat subsided, the number of airport users recovered to around 5 million in July and August, but fell back to 3.92 million in September due to the second spread in August.

In December, when the third corona spread reached its peak, the number of airport users reached only 3.68 million.

By airport, the airport with the highest number of users last year was Jeju Airport, with 21.0 million people visiting Jeju Airport.

It was followed by Gimpo Airport (17.45 million people).

On the other hand, the number of passengers at Incheon Airport last year was only about 12.05 million, down to a sixth level of the previous year (71.1 million).

It is interpreted that the proportion of using domestic flights increased as the sky road to overseas was blocked in the aftermath of Corona 19.

Park Seong-bong, a researcher at Hana Financial Investment, analyzed that “Corona 19 is re-proliferating in major countries around the world, and concerns about the spread of the corona 19 mutant virus from the UK are overlapping and international passenger demand is still sluggish.”

Researcher Park said, “In the end, the key to recovering passenger demand is to form collective immunity by stably spreading the COVID-19 vaccine at home and abroad. It is expected that the formation of collective immunity will take a considerable amount of time, so the possibility of a rapid recovery in the short term is limited.” Was diagnosed.
