Last year, only four books were borrowed by current students from the university library, which is half the level compared to 10 years ago. It is analyzed that the use of e-books instead of printed books has expanded influence.

The Ministry of Education and the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) announced on the 7th the ‘2020 Statistics of University Libraries and Survey Results on Changes in the Last 10 Years’.

According to KERIS, last year, one enrolled student borrowed an average of four books from university libraries, down 50% from 2011 (8.3 books).

KERIS explained, “The change in information use behavior from the way students borrowed printed books to use e-books was analyzed as the biggest factor.” He added, “The point that electronic materials and video materials are frequently used during lectures was also identified as a major cause.”

Last year, one college student purchased an average of 1.7 books, which was not much different from 2011 (1.6 books).

The cost of purchasing materials per enrolled student was 105,250 won. It increased by 9% from 2011 (96,335 won). The average cost of purchasing electronic materials per university increased by about 50% from 290 million won to 440 million won over the same period.

The proportion of electronic materials purchase cost among the total cost of purchasing data at universities rose 20 percentage points from 49% in 2011 to 69% last year.

The number of use of commercial databases (DB) per enrolled student that can determine the use of electronic data was 253.7 last year, doubled from 2011 (130.8).
