In December of last year, more than 50,000 complaints and accusations were filed with the prosecution for a month. This is the highest monthly record in 11 years. As there is a saying that “Korea is a republic of accusations and accusations,” this is a testament to the fact that the social phenomenon of prosecuting accusations and accusations has not disappeared.

According to the trend of criminal cases disclosed by the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office on the website on the 10th, the number of complaints and accusations received by the prosecution last month was a total of 5,545 (7,541 persons subject to complaints and charges). Compared to the previous year last year (41,235 cases), the increase amounted to 22.5% (9,310 cases). In detail, there were △43,838 complaints (65,992 people) and △6,707 complaints (11,549 people), which were also found to have increased by 22.1% and 25.8% compared to the previous year.

In particular, it is the first time in 11 years since December 2009 (51,561 cases) that the number of complaints and accusations exceeded 50,000. From January to November of last year, there were 37,000 to 44,000 cases per month, which is the normal level, but it has exploded in December. In 2009, due to the global financial crisis, there were many cases related to economic disputes such as fraud, and the number of complaints and accusations every month exceeded 50,000.

Regarding the rapid increase in accusations and accusations in December of last year, many analyzes within and outside the prosecution say that “the continuing social conflict and current issues would have had an impact.” For example, according to the spread of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19), there is a possibility that the number of cases of suing and accusing corona offenders who violate quarantine rules or interfered with quarantine activities may have increased. In addition, the conflict between Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae and Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol spreads through a camp confrontation, and civic groups and the general public may have filed accusations one after another.
