When the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that the AstraZeneca Corona 19 vaccine could be administered to the elderly over the age of 65, the chairman of the Medical Association’s largest house was strongly opposed.

In the case of elderly people 65 years of age or older, they argued that they should be vaccinated with Pfizer, Modena, or vaccines that have proven to be effective among the vaccines available to date.

Earlier, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (Director Kang-rip Kim) announced the results of a meeting of the COVID-19 vaccine safety and effectiveness verification advisory group held on the 31st of last month regarding the results of the clinical trial of’AstraZenecacovid-19 vaccine strain’.

As a result of the evaluation, the number of confirmed COVID-19 patients was 27 vaccine groups and 71 control groups, showing a preventive effect of about 62%. It was the result.

As a result of evaluating the preventive effect and safety of the elderly over 65 years of age, one corona19 occurred in the elderly vaccine-administered group and the control group, and neither the vaccine group nor the control group were hospitalized, and no serious diseases occurred.

In the immunogenicity evaluation, binding antibodies and neutralizing antibodies were produced in the elderly who administered the vaccine, and the seroconversion rate did not show a significant difference compared to the adult group.

In terms of safety, the incidence of predicted or unpredicted adverse events was similar or low compared to the adult group, and no significant drug-related adverse events occurred.

The verification advisory group expressed the opinion that administration to the elderly cannot be ruled out just because the number of elderly persons among the participants is small regarding the adequacy of vaccine administration to the elderly.

Regarding this, the president of the Korean Medical Association said,’AstraZeneca vaccine should not be vaccinated against the elderly over the age of 65′ through his Facebook page.

Chairman Choi said, “Recently, there is a controversy over whether the AstraZeneca vaccine is used in the elderly people 65 years of age or older in many countries around the world. They recommended vaccinations, but Germany, France and Italy, the major member states, recommend refraining from vaccination for the elderly over the age of 65.”

He added, “The Korea Medical Association is reviewing the efficacy and safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but it is judged that the efficacy for the elderly over 65 years of age has not been proven during the review process. It should be vaccinated for adults up to the age of 64, and should not be vaccinated for seniors over 65.”

He said, “In the case of elderly people 65 years of age or older, old age itself is a risk factor that can be severely affected when infected with Corona 19. These are often amalgamated with various chronic diseases, so there is a possibility of severe disease when infected with Corona 19. It is big.”

Therefore, in the case of elderly people 65 years of age or older, Choi explained that the most effective and proven vaccines, namely Pfizer and Modena vaccines, should be given.

In addition, Chairman Choi Ji-jip said, “Even if the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety decides that AstraZeneca vaccine can be vaccinated for the elderly aged 65 or older, it will be recommended to refrain from vaccination of AstraZeneca Vaccine from the Korea Medical Association We look forward to a reasonable conclusion based on the evidence.”
