From a geek professor to a geek president

KAIST held the inauguration ceremony of President Lee Kwang-hyung at Daejeon Headquarters on the 8th. In his inauguration address, President Lee emphasized, “The future world that will unfold in the future will face a great paradigm shift.” Mentioning the 50th anniversary of its establishment this year, he said, “Please gather your capabilities to create a’KAIST new culture’ for the next 50 years.”

President Lee then announced how to make KAIST newspapers and how to change universities. He said, “The problem with KAIST is that we study too much,” and suggested, “I will reduce the time to study my major by 10%, and learn character and leadership in that time.” It also planned to establish an art museum integrating science and art and run a failed research institute.

Above all, he made it clear his will to increase the global value of the university through technology commercialization. He said, “We will support commercialization to the extent that there are side effects so that one venture company can be established per research center.” It also announced a blueprint to nurture’questioning talent’ through educational innovation, self-define problems through research innovation, and build a global campus through internationalization innovation.

It promised to actively attract donations to materialize this plan. President Lee said, “We will attract donations of 100 million won a day. I think I’ve earned a lot today,” he said with confidence.

“Support for start-ups to the extent that there is a side effect”

In a congratulatory remark, former KAIST President Shin Seong-cheol said, “Intellect is important as a leader of KAIST, but emotional leadership that communicates and cares with more than 15,000 members is also important.” . Former Chairman of Future Industry, who donated 50 billion won to KAIST, said, “I want to hug President Lee stronger than a few words of congratulations.”

Nexon CEO Kim Jeong-joo, a student of President Lee, said, “Thanks to Mr. Lee and his wife, I feel’mother-like warmth’ at KAIST.” He was kicked out of the lab during his master’s course, but thanks to Lee, he was able to finish graduate school. However, I quit school when I was in my doctoral course.

National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seok, Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun, lawmaker Lee Won-wook, and Jim Deito, a professor at the University of Hawaii, delivered congratulatory messages. Dozens of disciples, including Kim Young-dal, founder of IDIS Holdings, also attended the inauguration ceremony.

When he was a professor, he was famous for giving unique test questions, such as’hack my computer’ and’create a problem that can’t be solved’. It is an existential model of Professor Park Ki-hoon (played by Ahn Jeong-hoon), who was called’Geek Professor’ in the SBS TV drama’KAIST’. The term of office is four years from this day.
