Korea’s world’s No. 1 shipbuilding industry centered on LNG carriers… Green light again this year-::: Global Green Growth Media

Ordered 42.5% of global ship orders last year
In the new year, orders such as LNG carriers and propulsion ships continue

[이투뉴스] Korea’s shipbuilding industry achieved the world’s No. 1 order volume, focusing on high value-added ships such as LNG carriers. In addition, even into the New Year, expectations are high as orders for ultra-large container ships promoting LNG continue to be lost.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, as a result of totaling the results of ship orders by country in 2020, Korea ranked first in the world by winning 8.19 million CGT orders out of the 19.24 million CGT ship orders worldwide. In the second half of last year’s sluggish first half, it won the world’s largest number of orders through intensive orders.

According to Clarkson Research, a market analysis company for shipbuilding and shipping in the UK, Korea’s first half of last year was 1.35 million CGT, far less than China’s 4.84 million CGT.

In particular, in December of last year, 21 out of 21 large LNG carriers (100%), 6 out of 6 VLCCs, ultra-large oil tankers with 200,000 DWT or more, and 10 out of 16 large container ships with 12,000 TEU or more. It showed a high competitive advantage in value-added ships.

An official from the Ministry of Industry evaluated that “Achievement achieved with the technology and quality demonstrated by our industry in the field of high-value-added ships such as LNG carriers, ultra-large container ships, and ultra-large oil tankers in a situation where global orders are sluggish due to the increased uncertainty caused by the spread of Corona 19.”

Such achievements in the domestic shipbuilding industry continue into the new year and are sending a green light. Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the midship holding company of Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, is raising expectations by winning large-scale orders for LNG carriers and LNG-promoting super-large container ships.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 5th that it has won an order for a 174,000㎥-class LNG carrier worth 193 billion won from Pan Ocean, a global shipping company. The ship is expected to be delivered by April 2023.

The ship that was ordered this time is equipped with a reliquefaction system in the latest membrane-type cargo hold to minimize the loss of cargo volume, and is suitable for eco-friendly regulations with a nitrogen oxide reduction device and ballast water treatment device. In particular, it is the latest eco-friendly smart ship that enables more economical and safer navigation with Svessel, a smart ship solution from Samsung Heavy Industries.

Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 5th that it has signed a contract with a shipping company located in Asia to build 6 ultra-large container ships for 15,000 TEU-class LNG, and about 900 billion won.

The ships that were ordered this time will be built four at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and two at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, and are scheduled to be delivered to ship owners sequentially from the first half of 2023. In particular, it is equipped with a large LNG fuel tank that can operate round-trip routes between Asia and Europe with only one charge, and drastically reduce the operating cost of the ship through the use of eco-friendly fuel and an optimal fuel supply system.

The Export-Import Bank of Korea’s Overseas Economic Research Institute reported that the importance of efficiency and performance will increase in that global new shipbuilding orders are demand for responding to environmental regulations, especially greenhouse gas emission regulations. It was also expected to improve. In particular, the use of LNG is expected to increase as the carbon dioxide emission per ton of petroleum fuel is only about two-thirds.

Clarkson Research predicted that this year’s global ship orders will reach 23.8 million CGT, up 23.7% from last year. By ship type, LNG carriers expected 3.2 million CGT and container ships 6.3 million CGT. Large LNG carrier orders are expected to reach an average of 51 over the next five years until 2025, driven by global LNG demand.

The Ministry of Industry will continue to provide support for securing future competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry, such as autonomous ships, eco-friendly ships, and smart Korean yards, so that domestic shipbuilders can maintain leadership in the future market in response to changes in the shipbuilding paradigm of eco-friendly and smartization.
