Amid the spread of hate crimes against Asians in the United States, a Korean grandmother was attacked and injured.

According to the Washington Post (WP) on the 13th (local time), New York White Plains police arrested Glenmore Nembud, 40, on the 11th for spitting and punching an 83-year-old Korean-American woman.

According to the police, Nembud suddenly assaulted her grandmother who visited the shopping street on the 9th for no reason. Grandmother pounded her head on the ground and lost consciousness, and when she woke up, the perpetrator had escaped.

Police said Nemberd was homeless and had a history of being caught by police at least four times. Nembud is accused of second-degree assault. If convicted, he can face up to seven years in prison.

In an interview with ABC Broadcasting, the victim’s grandmother said that he was collecting empty bottles and cans near the Nordstrom department store at the time of the incident, and that he could not go to the hospital due to medical expenses even though he bleed.

New York’s Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Roca said she was looking into the allegations of racist hate crimes. Auditor Roca said, “Hate crimes affect everyone and create an atmosphere of fear,” he said. “Even if you are not a victim, you should report hate crimes if you see them.”

The WP pointed out that violence targeting Asian Americans is the latest and most important incident in the United States.

In the United States, hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased significantly due to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) pandemic. Hate crimes against Asian Americans in major U.S. cities increased by 149% over the previous year.

US President Joe Biden said on the 11th that a vicious hate crime aimed at Asian Americans has occurred since the corona 19 pandemic, “it’s not like the United States. It should be stopped immediately.”
