Korean Air delays mileage system reform two years later

On the day, Korean Air said, “We have decided to delay the implementation of the reorganized mileage system by two years as it becomes difficult for customers to use mileage due to air travel restrictions due to the prolonged new coronavirus infection (Corona 19).”

Korean Air announced a plan to reorganize the mileage system in December 2019. The purpose was to increase the mileage accrual rate of First Class and Prestige Class and improve the mileage accrual rate of Economy Class according to the fare level of airline tickets.

However, consumers objected to the fact that the mileage required for some long-distance routes increased as the criteria for redemption of award tickets and upgrade award mileage changed from’region’ to’distance’. The fact that the economy class mileage accrual rate, which consumers use the most, was lowered was also a complaint.

There were also voices saying that the reorganization of the system should be postponed as the grace period, which takes place before the reorganization, became famous due to the Corona 19 incident. On the 2nd, a petition was posted on the Blue House’s public petition bulletin board asking’to stop Korean Air from pushing for reorganization of the mileage system unfavorable to consumers’.

As Korean Air decided to extend the mileage system by two years, the new mileage system will take effect on April 1, 2023. Korean Air explained that it is possible to have a total of 3 years and 3 months, including 3 months prior notice and 3 years grace period.

Korean Air extends the expiration date for an additional year only for mileage that expires this year. It was taken to make it available until the end of 2022. The mileage that has already been extended once (expired at the end of 2020) is also extended and can be used until the end of 2022.
