Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering wins 637 billion orders for 5 super-large container ships

Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, a mid-ship holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, won orders for five super-large container ships worth a total of 63 billion won.

Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 26th that it has recently signed a contract with Taiwan-based shipping company Wan Hai Lines to build five 13,200 TEU-class super-large container ships.

The ultra-large container ship that was ordered this time is 335m in length, 51m in width, and 27.3m in height. In particular, this ship is equipped with a nitrogen oxide reduction system (SCR) to respond to environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Shanghai Container Ship Fare Index (SCFI), which is the global container ship fare index, recorded 2885 points (as of January 15), the highest since 2009. On the 19th, it recorded 2584 points, up three times from the same period last year (898 points).

As container freight rates remain high, the newbuilding price index is also on the rise. According to Clarkson Research, a shipbuilding shipping market research institute, the containership newbuilding price index has risen by about 3% on average monthly to 76.4 in January, 77.4 in February and 82 in March after recording 75.4 in December last year.
