Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, New Year’s First Order… 6 ultra-large container ships for 900 billion won

Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the midship holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, succeeded in winning the first large-scale order in the new year.

Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 5th that it has recently signed a contract with a shipping company in Asia for 6 ultra-large container ships promoting 15,000 TEU-class liquefied natural gas (LNG). 1TEU is one 6m container. The contract size is about 900 billion won.

The ship that was ordered this time is characterized by being equipped with a large LNG fuel tank that can operate round-trip routes between Asia and Europe with just one charge. The ship’s operating costs have also been improved through the use of eco-friendly fuel and an optimal fuel supply system. Ulsan Hyundai Heavy Industries (009540)It is expected to be built four at a time and two at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, and delivered to shipowners in order from the first half of 2023.

Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding has won orders for a total of 50 LNG propulsion vessels, the largest in the world so far. It is leading the market in this field by delivering the world’s first LNG-powered large tanker and LNG-powered ultra-large container ship, respectively, in July 2018 and September last year.

An official of Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said, “The demand for eco-friendly ships is increasing due to the strengthening of environmental regulations. We will focus our capacity to win orders, focusing on high value-added, eco-friendly ships such as LNG carriers, including container ships that are expected to recover in the market this year.” Revealed.

Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has set a target for orders in the shipbuilding sector this year at $14.9 billion (about 16 trillion won).
