On December 11, last year, KOMIPO won the Construction of the Year Award at the 22nd Global Energy Awards of S&P Global Platts in the United States. This award is the result of the world’s first large-capacity urban underground power plant, the Seoul Power Plant, for its excellence in power generation facility construction and operation capabilities.

This award is the world’s most prestigious award for energy. In particular, this year’s construction division won the competition with strong finalists such as NASA and CS Energy (Australia).

Midbu Power has built and operated Korea’s first Dangin-ri thermal power plant in 1930 with foreign funds and technology. Then, the best underground power plant built with its own technology in the same place was recognized by the United States, the powerhouse of electricity.

KOMIPO created the world’s first 800MW-class underground complex power plant project with the idea of making the power plant underground and creating a park on the ground to open and abolish Seoul Thermal Power Plants 4 and 5 as a creative space for cultural artists. Construction started in June 2013, overcoming numerous obstacles such as large-scale civil works for underground power plants and 750km of water transportation for transport of ultra-large power plants to the city center. In order to operate a safe underground power plant, the construction was successfully completed in November 2019 by strengthening the facilities related to fire, gas, and ventilation by 2-3 times the standard.

Currently, the Seoul Power Plant is producing electricity and heating heat underground, and the first ground park construction has been completed. The abolished power generation facility is expected to be reborn as a new cultural and art space like the Pompidou Center in France.

Hyung-koo Park, President of Korea Midland Power Co., said, “We are proud to be recognized by the world for the passion and technology of KOMIPO. We will continue to do our best to lead the energy industry as a clean energy leader who raises the value of life through constant challenge and innovation I will do everything.”
