‘Kona’ fires even in the recalled car… Investigation undertaken by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

Another fire broke out in Hyundai’s Kona electric vehicle, which was recalled due to a series of fires.

The car on fire is more controversial because it has also been repaired as a result of a recall.

Fortunately, there was no human injury, but consumers are bound to be anxious.

Reporter Lee Haein covered it.

Smoke keeps rising from the vehicles firefighters extinguish.

Yesterday afternoon, a Kona electric car that was charging at an electric car charging station in Daegu caught fire.

The fire appears to have originated from a battery mounted under the rear seat, but the exact cause is still unknown.

This is not the first time a Kona electric car fire has occurred.

Since its launch in 2018, 15 fires have been reported, including this one, 11 domestically and 4 overseas.

Heondae Motors recalled the battery management system for 77,000 Kona electric vehicles sold around the world in October last year after controversy over the fire.

The problem is that the vehicle on fire this time was the vehicle that updated the system in response to the recall.

At the time of the update, there were no signs of battery abnormality, so the battery was not replaced.

Consumers are bound to be anxious.

“The fact that the recalled vehicle had a fire means that the problem has not been completely resolved… and because there is such a concern that public anxiety is further amplified (you must quickly determine the cause).”

The battery used in the Kona electric vehicle on fire is made by LG Chem.

Following the National Institute for Scientific Investigation, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has also begun to investigate the cause of the fire.
