Kolon Industries’ transparent PI film, first installed on laptops beyond foldable phones

CPI film to Lenovo foldable notebook… First applied to medium and large displays

[서울=뉴스핌] Reporter Yoonae Lee = Kolon Industries announced on the 5th that its transparent polyimide (PI) film product was used as a cover window for the world’s first foldable (folding) notebook released by Lenovo.

Based on the application of PI film to foldable notebooks, Kolon Industries is planning to preoccupy the mid- to large-sized foldable display market beyond mobile phones.

Transparent PI film is transparent like glass and does not scratch even when folded hundreds of thousands of times, so it is used as a key material for cover windows of foldable displays.

Kolon Industries succeeded in mass production of PI film for the first time in the world in 2019 and named it’CPI Film’.

This time, Kolon Industries CPI film was installed on Lenovo’s Sync Pad X1 Fold product. The X1 Fold is a premium foldable laptop that can easily fold and unfold a 13.3-inch screen.

Until now, transparent PI film has been mainly applied to foldable phones, but this is the first time it has been applied to mid-to-large foldable displays such as notebook computers.

Compared to other materials, CPI film has the advantage of being more durable against temperature changes and long-term use, and can be freely applied to form factors of various sizes and designs.

In particular, the world’s first touch pen technology, which is difficult to apply to the thin glass cover window, was applied. The X1 Fold was first introduced to the North American market at the end of last year and has been on sale in Korea since February.

“The world’s first foldable laptop with CPI film mass-produced is that our innovative technology has been recognized in the global market,” said Kim Jong-il, head of the CPI film business. “Leading the future in the next-generation display market We will devote more to product R&D so that we can have a competitive edge,” he said.
