SK Hynix announced on the 8th that it will mass-produce 18GB (gigabyte) LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, the largest capacity in the industry.

This product operates at a speed of 6400Mb/s, which is about 20% faster than mobile DRAM (LPDDR5, 5500Mb/s) installed in existing smartphones. It is a speed that can process 10 FHD (Full-HD)-class movies (5GB) in 1 second.

It will be installed on top-of-the-line smartphones to support the optimal environment for playing high-resolution games and videos. SK Hynix predicts that the application range of the product will continue to expand in the future with the latest technologies such as ultra-high-performance camera apps and AI (artificial intelligence).

An official from SK Hynix said, “As the capacity is larger than the 16GB product, the temporary storage space for data will expand, which will greatly improve processing speed and image quality. SK Hynix explained that this product will enable smartphone makers to release smartphones with higher performance than the previous generation.

SK Hynix will begin mass production by supplying the product to the gaming smartphone’Repulic of Gamers’ (ROG), which is scheduled to be released by the global IT company ASUS.

Market research firm Omdia predicts that LPDDR5 DRAM demand currently accounts for about 10% of the total mobile DRAM market, but demand will increase every year to exceed 50% by 2023 as the application range of advanced devices increases.
