KHNP promotes its own 100 billion won Pohang fuel cell project

MOU with related organizations…part of Gyeongbuk’hydrogen fuel cell cluster’

[에너지신문] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power will self-promote the Pohang fuel cell power generation project worth 100 billion won.

On the 20th, KHNP signed a’MOU for Pohang Fuel Cell Power Plant’ with Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, Yeongnam Energy Service and Pohang Techno Park’ at Pohang City Hall on the 20th.

The Pohang fuel cell power generation project, which is scheduled to be built in the Pohang Blue Valley Industrial Complex by 2023, is attracting attention as its own project in which KHNP invests about 100 billion won in total project cost.

This project is promoted as part of the’hydrogen fuel cell power generation cluster construction project’ in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and is expected to generate synergies through industry-academia-research cooperation, in connection with the development of power plant maintenance (O&M) technology and activation of university manpower training programs in the province.

Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang City provide administrative support for cluster formation, project licensing and resident cooperation, while KHNP is responsible for the construction and operation of hydrogen fuel power plants and localization of O&M technology. In addition, Yeongnam Energy Service will supply city gas stably, and Pohang Techno Park will provide research manpower and equipment for securing O&M technology and nurturing manpower.

Han Su-won, president of Han Su-won, said, “We will not only lead the development of the local community through the Pohang fuel cell power generation business, but also make efforts to make the east coast of Gyeongbuk become the foundation for a leap forward as a world-class hydrogen fuel cell industry mecca.”

Fuel cell power generation is a power generation method that uses chemical reactions rather than combustion, and has a low impact on the surrounding environment, and is thus attracting attention as an eco-friendly future power generation source. In particular, KHNP explained that this project has the advantage of contributing to national energy efficiency by expanding new and renewable energy and supplying fuel cell power plants to industrial complexes that use a lot of electricity.
