The completion of Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6 is expected to be delayed again due to the enforcement of the Severe Accident Business Penalty Act.

In an article posted on his social network service (SNS) on the 2nd, Jung Jae-hoon, president of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, said, “Prevention of industrial safety related to the Severe Disaster Act and actual actions to be taken, the impact on the maintenance of existing nuclear power plants, and the virtual suspension of night work. According to the in-depth discussion, such as the inevitable rescheduling of Shin-Kori units 5 and 6 under construction.”

The construction period of Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6 has been postponed several times due to the Moon Jae-in administration. The construction of Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6, which was approved by the Nuclear Safety Commission in June 2016, was originally expected to be completed in March this year and Unit 6 in March next year.

However, in June 2017, when about 28% of the process was in progress, the government decided to temporarily suspend the construction at a state council meeting. This is because it has announced that it will decide through a public opinion investigation whether to continue to build Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6 as a reason for its pledge before leaving nuclear power. The public opinion investigation concluded that the construction was resumed, but the process was stopped for about four months.

In addition, as the 52-hour work week was implemented, the scheduled completion dates for Singori Unit 5 were delayed to March 2023 and the 6th unit to the end of June 2024. KHNP plans to postpone the completion date even further by the enforcement of this severe disaster law.

KHNP said, “The possibility of serious accidents such as realizing the unreasonable process schedule that affects the safety of the workplace and avoiding nighttime work with a high probability of accidents, and the construction schedule has been added to perform the seismic performance improvement work, and the extension of the construction period is discussed with related companies. It is under review.” However, the detailed extension period has not been decided yet.
