Climate change center distributes corporate environmental data analysis report

[에너지신문] KEPCO KPS and Korea District Heating Corporation ranked first and second in greenhouse gas emissions compared to sales, respectively.

The Climate Change Center (President Young-sook Yoo, former Minister of Environment) announced that it will distribute environmental data analysis reports of companies using the’Environmental Data Platform’.

On the 6th, starting with the report on △Greenhouse gas emission (direct and indirect) analysis △Energy consumption (TOE) △Fine dust emission (ton) △Water recycling rate (%) △Waste recycling rate (%), etc. Environmental data of 500 domestic companies 5 The species will be analyzed.

The analysis used data from 2015 to 2018 (4 years, public announcement year 2016 to 2019) among environmental data provided to the government by 500 listed companies that were released on the environmental data platform.

According to the report on GHG emissions analysis, POSCO, which ranked first in the total amount of GHG emissions in Korea as of 2018, fell to 3rd place when calculating GHG emissions compared to sales.

It was found that KEPCO KPS produced 2920tCO₂eq per 1 billion won in sales. This is about 1.2 times that of POSCO (2367tCO₂eq), which is the number one in total greenhouse gas emissions, and about 2.8 times that of Hyundai Steel (1040tCO₂eq), which is the second place.

In addition, in the automobile manufacturing sector, Hyundai Motor Company had the highest greenhouse gas emissions, but Ssangyong Motors was the highest as a result of checking the amount of emissions compared to sales.

In the case of heavy industry, GHG emissions from Hyundai Heavy Industries were 480,57tCO₂eq, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction recorded 243,680tCO₂eq. There was no big difference in.

While LG Chem ranked first in sales in the petrochemical industry (as of 2018), its GHG emissions per 1 billion won in sales was 330 tonCO₂eq, lower than Lotte Chemical’s 580tCO₂eq.

In the field of information and communication technology, NAVER transparently discloses GHG emissions data in 2018, while its rival Kakao did not disclose GHG emissions. In addition, SK Telecom is the only telecommunications company to disclose greenhouse gas emissions transparently, and KT and U+ did not disclose greenhouse gas emissions.

In particular, in Korea, President Moon Jae-in declared the 2050 Net Zero, and this report is of great significance as disclosure of environmental data is becoming more important as a corporate responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve Net Zero.

Kim So-hee, Secretary General of the Climate Change Center, said, “It is a dimension of encouraging companies to quantify and disclose environmental data as a way to minimize green swan risk.”

Meanwhile, this report and environmental data platform can be found on the website of the Climate Change Center.
