‘KEC’ enforced on January 1… to increase field acceptance

Ministry of Industry announces 1 year parallel operation based on current adaptation period consideration
Prohibition of mixed application..”Efforts to establish a stable settlement through mutual cooperation”

[에너지신문] The Korea Electro-technical Code (KEC), which is fully enforced in January of next year, will be operated in parallel with the judgment standards of the current electrical equipment technical standards for one year for smooth application. However, the two criteria cannot be applied together during this period.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has revised and announced the electrical facility technology standards so that it can be applied in parallel with the electrical facility regulations by delaying the timing of the abolition of the current electrical facility technology standards for one year, taking into account the adaptation period of the industry following the KEC implementation.

KEC is a user-oriented electrical regulation that can be applied to the domestic environment based on the international standard (IEC), breaking away from the Japanese-based technology standard system. The electricity industry recognized the need for development in 2010 and promoted development from 2011, enacted in 2018. It will be implemented in earnest from January 1, 2021 after the announcement.

In the industry, the implementation of KEC is expected to have a positive impact, such as solving unclear and unnecessary regulations that have been operating differently from international standards and inducing domestic related technology development in the future.

In addition, it is expected to be of great help in revitalizing the renewable energy field in the future as it defines in detail the regulations on facilities such as renewable energy facilities such as solar and wind power generation and grid connection standards, which are becoming an issue recently.

Considering the period of adaptation to the industry, including the first implementation of KEC, and operating in parallel with the judgment standards of the current electrical equipment technology standard for one year, the electricity industry decided to work together to establish a stable settlement and activate KEC during this period.

The Korea Electric Association, which is a technical standard consignment organization, operates a consultative body composed of related organizations to enhance field acceptance and resolve industry difficulties to revitalize the application of KEC. It is planned to be made available for free in industrial sites through the association’s Internet website (http://kec.kea.kr/). Along with this, KEC free training is also held nationwide.

An official from the Korea Electric Association said, “We will continue to devote ourselves to the smooth application of KEC and advancement of technical standards, cooperating with the consultative body after hearing the voices of the difficulties in the field.”
