Chinese CATL recorded 28.1GWh, accounting for 24.2% of the total electric vehicle battery usage, maintaining the global No. 1 position.

LG Energy Solutions achieved the first place in annual cumulative battery usage for the first time in March last year, and remained at the top until August. However, China’s CATL reversed from September of last year, maintaining the No. 1 position until November.

CATL was the first company in the electric vehicle battery sector for the third consecutive year from 2017 to 2019 with full support from the Chinese government. The battery usage gap between the two companies widened from 0.3 GWh in September last year to 1.8 GWh in November.

CATL, which began supplying batteries for Tesla Model 3 sold in China in the second half of last year, is expanding orders as the Chinese government extended its EV subsidy support policy for two more years.

An industry insider said, “CATL occupies about 50% of the electric vehicle battery market in China, and it is expected to continue to increase its share in the Chinese market, which is a’tilted playground,’ with a differentiated subsidy policy.”

In particular, SK Innovation’s aggressive investment, such as expansion of overseas plants, increased the amount of battery use for electric vehicles by about 3.4 times compared to the same period last year (1.9 GWh) and its market share increased by 2.9 times.

SK Innovation also surpassed Samsung SDI in monthly electric vehicle battery usage for two consecutive months in October and November last year. LG Ener Solutions’ cumulative electric vehicle battery usage from January to November last year was 2.4 times the same period last year, and Samsung SDI’s 1.7 times the same period last year.

The cumulative market share of the three’K Battery’ companies was 33.9%, which is twice that of 2019 (16.6%).
