[IT비즈뉴스 최태우 기자] It was investigated that the domestic secondary battery industry has grown significantly despite the aftermath of Corona 19 that spread worldwide last year.

As the demand for rechargeable batteries is expected to increase significantly due to the impact of eco-friendly policies of major countries and the expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) market, the influence of K-batteries is also expected to increase.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Battery Industry Association on the 18th, in 2020, the secondary battery industry recorded 2.3 trillion won in production, 7.2 trillion won in exports, and 5.3 trillion won in domestic demand, respectively.

Compared to the previous year (2019), production increased by 20.0%, exports increased by 2.9%, and domestic demand increased by 11.6%. In particular, exports increased for 5 consecutive years.

As the global electric vehicle (EV) market has grown, the growth trend has been markedly centered on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

Last year, the scale of global secondary battery production by domestic companies was 2.3 trillion won. Of these, lithium-ion batteries account for about 20 trillion won.

The market share of major domestic secondary battery manufacturers such as LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation has also increased. As of November last year, the combined share of these three companies was 34%, more than doubled from the previous year (16%).

The outlook for this year is also bright as the demand for secondary batteries is expected to increase significantly as downstream industries such as electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS) expand due to eco-friendly policies of major countries such as Europe, the United States, and China.

Secondary battery production this year is expected to reach 31 trillion won and exports to 7 billion dollars, increasing 32% and 5.7% year-on-year, respectively.

Vice Minister of Industry Park Jin-gyu visited Misomsystech, a secondary battery solution company located in Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, on the 18th to encourage employees and emphasize the government’s willingness to foster the secondary battery industry.

Misumsystech is producing secondary battery battery management system (BMS) and battery packs, starting with secondary battery inspection equipment. In December of last year, it completed the development of a battery pack for an electric motorcycle battery replacement platform.

The battery replacement platform is a system that safely charges personal mobility (PM) batteries such as electric motorcycles, electric bicycles, and kickboards using common charging facilities and efficiently manages the battery.

Deputy Minister Park said, “Last year, the domestic secondary battery industry has grown on the basis of the expansion of global electric vehicle demand, and the market share of domestic companies has greatly expanded. The related market is also expected to grow as demands such as robots and drones expand, as well as mobility.”

“The Ministry of Industry will also provide full support such as technology development and demonstration, safety technology, and standardization to revitalize the secondary battery industry.”
