[무안=아시아경제 호남취재본부 윤자민 기자] The five-year maritime border dispute between Jeollanam-do and Gyeongnam was ended with the victory of Jeollanam-do.

According to Jeonnam-do on the 25th, the Constitutional Court rejected Gyeongnam-do’s claim in the sentence of’trial for dispute over the maritime border between Jeonnam and Gyeongnam’ and gave the hand of Jeollanam-do to maintain the current maritime border.

The maritime boundary between Jeonnam and Gyeongnam, as determined by the Constitution, reflects the topographic map published in 1918.

Since the enactment of the Local Autonomy Act in 1949, it has been used as an administrative boundary for over 70 years.

In 2011, 18 fishing vessels in Gyeongnam’s steamer nets invaded the sea boundary of Jeonnam and engaged in illegal fishing, which became the starting point of this problem. They were convicted in the Supreme Court in June 2015.

In response, Gyeongnam-do filed a request for a competent dispute to the Constitutional Court in December 2015, demanding that the maritime boundary between the two regions, which has been recognized so far, be broken and the equidistant middle line be changed to a maritime boundary.

In addition to the existing litigation agent, Jeonnam Province additionally appoints a prominent law firm, submits petitions signed by members of the National Assembly, mayor/gun, provincial lawmakers, si/gun lawmakers, social groups, fishermen, etc., and issues a relay statement. Respond to the authority dispute trial.

As such, it is analyzed that the interest of all walks of the Jeollanam-do, as well as the active participation and support of the citizens of the provinces and Yeosu, became the driving force that led to the victory of the dispute over the maritime border.

With this sentencing as an opportunity, Jeonnam Province urged the two local fishermen to take active measures to ensure safe fishing with each other while respecting the current maritime boundaries according to the results of the constitution.
