Jeonju, stepping on the accelerator pedal for commercialization of carbon materials

As the Korea Carbon Convergence Technology Institute newly launched as the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency, a national institution that will play the role of a control tower in the Korean carbon industry, the acceleration of carbon commercialization that Jeonju has been focusing on has accelerated.

This is because the government directly takes care of and fosters the carbon industry, and Jeonju has been designated by the government as a specialized complex for carbon materials subsidiary (manufacturing materials, parts, and equipment) that will become a base for localization of Korea.

In addition, the Jeonju Carbon Materials National Industrial Complex, where carbon-related companies, R&D (research and development) institutions, and corporate support facilities will be integrated by 2024, will be established, and carbon-related overseas export projects and R&D support according to the opening of the National Agency for Promotion, Startup support projects are also expected to become more active.

Jeonju City announced on the 24th that it plans to speed up the construction project of the Jeonju Carbon Materials National Industrial Complex, where carbon composite materials-related companies will occupy, with the promotion of the Korea Institute of Carbon Convergence Technology as a national institution and designation of a special complex for small managers.

Jeonju Carbon Materials National Industrial Complex, which will become a base for localization of carbon materials, parts, and equipment and commercialization of carbon composites, will invest a total of 17 billion won by 2024, around 656,000m2 (approx. 200,000 pyeong) is a project to create an industrial complex where 70 companies, including carbon-related companies, 20 R&D (R&D) facilities, and 20 support facilities will reside on the site.

When the Jeonju Carbon Material National Industrial Complex is established, a large number of carbon-related companies and research centers, such as carbon-related intermediate goods companies and finished product manufacturing companies, will move in, centering on the nearby Hyosung Carbon Fiber Jeonju plant that produces carbon materials, invigorating the local economy and bringing citizens to life. It is expected to create more jobs for people. There are 92 companies that have already announced their intention to move in after the carbon material national industrial complex was established in Jeonju.

Furthermore, the city is determined to achieve the localization of materials, parts, and equipment, which account for a large proportion of the trade deficit with Japan, by strategically growing carbon materials, which are called’new dream materials’, as they are lighter than iron but 10 times stronger in strength.

Through this, the city is determined to solidify its status as the number one carbon material in Korea that encompasses localization, advancement, commercialization, and industrialization of carbon materials.

The Korea Institute of Carbon Convergence Technology (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Technology), newly launched as a national institution in this regard, is the first research institute specializing in carbon in Korea established under the name of Jeonju Machinery Industry Research Center in 2003, and has laid the foundation for the development of the carbon materials and fusion parts industry. It has been promoting long- and short-term joint research and development projects for companies and business support and business incubation through the establishment of advanced equipment.

For example, the Institute of Technology developed general-purpose carbon fiber technology in 2009, and in 2011, developed the T-700-class carbon fiber technology for the third time in the world after Japan and the United States, leading the localization and advancement of carbon fiber. Based on this, more than 30 carbon-related companies have moved into the Jeonju high-tech industrial complex, leading the Korean carbon industry.

In the future, the city plans to actively cooperate with the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency to localize carbon, attract related companies, and foster talents in the carbon industry in order to revitalize the local economy and create jobs for citizens.

Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-soo said, “With the opening of the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency, which will lead the Korean carbon industry, the carbon industry in Jeonju has now become the carbon industry of Korea.” “We will continue to actively cooperate with the Agency, the government, and Jeonbuk Province for the development of the Korean carbon industry. , We will make the foundation of the carbon industry ecosystem more solid, centering on the national industrial complex of carbon materials.”

Meanwhile, the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency held an opening ceremony on the first floor of the main building to announce a new start. The Agency will be officially launched in March as a public institution under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
