A forest fire at Nochusan, Gujeol-ri, Yeoryang-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, turned 12㏊ of national forest into ashes and extinguished in 18 hours.
As the day dawned on the 21st, the forest authorities put in 14 extinguishing helicopters and began suppressing Hwasun located at the top of Mount Nochu. On the ground, 42 firefighters and 33 equipment were mobilized, and the fire was caught at around 9:40 am on this day with a three-dimensional operation.
This wildfire, which happened at around 3:50 pm on the 20th, turned 12㏊ of national forests in Nochusan into ashes. It is the same area as 17 soccer fields.
At the time of the ignition, the forest fire site was on a steep slope and there was a limit to manpower input, and as the sun went down, even 11 extinguishing helicopters were withdrawn, increasing the damage area. The fire quickly spread to the summit along the’V’-shaped Nochusan valley. Moreover, at one time, a gust of 6m per second did not accelerate the evolution.
After sunset, the forest authorities put aviation and special extinguishing teams on the site, fighting against fire. The crew entered at the same time on the left and right side of the Nochusan slope, stopping the spread for nearly 10 hours.
Fortunately, the wind stopped overnight and proceeded in the opposite direction to the private house, so there was no damage to property or human life to nearby residents. However, the residents could not easily sleep while watching the soaring fire.
The forest authority is planning to investigate the exact cause of the fire and the damage area along with local governments and firefighting as the fire started in the farmland near the private house was transferred to the mountain.
An official from the Forest Service made it clear that “if the perpetrators of forest fires are arrested, they plan to severely punish them.” The official said, “Because there is a high risk of forest fires due to dry and strong wind warnings, it is necessary to be careful not to cause wildfires such as illegal incineration and misfires.”
