The 9 member companies belonging to the Jeju Island Journalists Association, etc., received the request of Jeju Island and the Jeju Island Council and commissioned two public opinion polling agencies, including Gallup Korea and Mbrain Public, from the 15th to the 17th. It was announced on the 18th. The survey was conducted separately on 2,000 Jeju residents and 500 residents of Seongsan-eup. In an opinion poll of 2,000 citizens of Jeju Island, public opinion against the construction of an airport predominated. In the Embrain Public survey, the opposition recorded 51.1%, outpacing public opinion of’Agree’ (43.8%) outside the margin of error (±2.19%). In the Gallup Korea survey, 47% said’No’ and 44.1% said’Agree’. However, in a survey of residents of Seongsan-eup, which included the second airport, the responses in favor of the airport construction were twice as high in both surveys. The positive response was 64.9% in the Gallup Korea survey and 65.6% in the Embrain Public survey. The opposite response was 31.4% for Gallup Korea and 33% for Embrain Public. This poll was based on an agreement between the Do and Provincial Council on the second airport poll in December of last year, and there was no discussion on the case where the result of the poll was within the margin of error, or if the result of the poll of the citizens of the province and Seongsan-eup were different. There is no coercion to follow the poll results. For this reason, it is also possible that the results of this poll will lead to another conflict rather than putting an end to the controversy over the construction of the second airport for six years. However, if the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Jeju Island enforced the construction of the second airport due to the high number of respondents to the citizens’ opinion polls, opposition groups and other opposition groups will likely face strong opposition. Gallup Korea has 2019 male and female residents over 19 years old (sampling error ±2.2% confidence level 95%), Seongsan-eup residents 504 (sample error ±4.4%, confidence level 95%), and Embrain Public is 2000 residents (sampling error ± 2.19%, confidence level 95%), and 500 residents of Seongsan-eup (sample error ±4.38%, confidence level 95%) were surveyed respectively.
