On the 13th, the Tohoku Shinkansen, a high-speed railway linking the Japanese metropolitan area and the Tohoku region, stopped due to a 7.3 earthquake off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Japanese authorities predicted it would take more than ten days to restore the Tohoku Shinkansen.
According to Kyodo News on the 15th, Japanese high-speed rail company JR East reported that the pole that supports the power supply line was broken by the effect of the earthquake or the elevated bridge that supports the railroad was damaged. It was analyzed that it would take about 10 days to resume operation after completing the restoration work.
The Akita Shinkansen and Yamagata Shinkansen, which connect directly to the Tohoku Shinkansen, were also affected. These routes were suspended all day on the 14th and are running fewer times on the 15th. It is also expected that it will take more than ten days to resume direct operation to Tokyo.
As the core railroad to Japan’s Tohoku region was virtually paralyzed, it took an emergency to secure alternative means of transportation. Major Japanese airlines have decided to introduce temporary flights to and from each regional airport in Tohoku. Companies that operate highway buses to and from Fukushima Station in the metropolitan area and Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture are also increasing.
It was counted that more than 100 people were injured in Japan due to the earthquake. According to local public broadcaster NHK, the earthquake affected 102 people in the Tohoku region of Japan, including Fukushima Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture, injured by local fire departments.
In particular, the vibration was so strong that I could feel the vibration strongly even in downtown Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers away from the epicenter, and it is known that the vibration lasted for tens of seconds. The media reported that the damage to the subway and general roads as well as the high-speed rail is significant, causing great inconvenience in moving.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said, “There is no serious damage reported by the earthquake,” but he urged the people to stay indoors and prepare for aftershocks as much as possible.
