The Japanese government decided on the 26th to suspend new entry of foreigners from all over the world. In addition to airport quarantine, cases of infection with a new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) variant originating in the UK have been confirmed in Tokyo.

According to the Nippon Geizai Shimbun, the Japanese government’s measures to suspend new entry into the country are from the 28th to the end of January 2021. It is possible for Japanese nationals or foreigners residing in Japan to return or re-enter Japan. However, restrictions are further strengthened, such as not allowing them to quarantine for two weeks after returning home, which was exempted under certain conditions.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga received a report from an official of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, a ministry in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo, on the afternoon of that day, and discussed countermeasures. At a press conference the day before, Prime Minister Suga implied the policy of strengthening the mizugi countermeasures to block the influx of infectious agents through airports and ports, saying, “I will quickly strengthen measures while looking at the situation in each country” regarding the countermeasures against the variant of Corona 19.

The Japanese government has allowed new entry to foreigners who have stayed in Japan for three months or more for a medium or long term, subject to quarantine for two weeks after entering the country in October. However, after the spread of the corona 19 strain confirmed in the UK, it has decided to stop new entry from the UK from the 24th and South Africa from the 26th. This measure was expanded to the world in response to signs of the spread of the corona 19 strain in Korea. The easing of quarantine for Japanese returning or re-entry from foreign countries was also suspended for those returning from the UK on the 24th, but will expand to the world from the 28th.

The reason that the Japanese government has swiftly responded is that it is likely that airport quarantine has already been breached. The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the previous day (25th) that five men and women who arrived from the UK through Haneda Airport in Tokyo and Kansai Airport in Osaka were infected with the Corona 19 variant.

However, it was confirmed that two people, including a man in his 30s who had stayed in the UK in Tokyo, and a woman in his 20s, who had stayed in the UK, were infected with the COVID-19 variant. After returning home as a captain on the 16th, the man was found positive at a medical institution in the province on the 21st due to symptoms such as coughing. Women in their twenties, who are close contacts with men, have no history of staying in the UK. This is the first time a person infected with the COVID-19 variant has not been in the UK in Japan. The two have been hospitalized at medical institutions in Tokyo since the 24th.

On the other hand, on this day (as of 8:00 pm), the number of new corona 19 confirmed cases across Japan was 3,877, the highest ever. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government also recorded 949 people, breaking the record high.
