IOC “I’m not sure of the July event”… Major foreign media also negative outlook
In response to the spread of the new coronavirus infectious disease (Corona 19), the Japanese government has issued an expanded emergency, but the spread has not been braked, with 7,000 new confirmed cases recorded on the second day. Major foreign media in the US and Europe predict that it will be difficult to hold the Tokyo Olympics scheduled for July given the current situation in Japan.
According to the local public broadcaster NHK on the 17th, there were 7014 newly confirmed corona19 confirmed all over Japan the previous day. Accordingly, the cumulative confirmed cases of Corona 19 in Japan increased to 32,5497. The number of confirmed cases per day recorded 7,000 for three consecutive days on the last 7-9 days, and then decreased to 4,000 due to the decrease in the number of corona 19 tests during the three consecutive holidays (9-11), and then increased to 7132 on the 15th.
As the number of infected patients has recently increased, the shortage of beds for corona19 patients is also intensifying. Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced the day before that the number of people infected with Corona 19 in home care has reached 3,208 for the first time as of the 12th. This is an increase of 1.7 times compared to the previous week’s announcement.
On the other hand, as the corona spreading trend has not subsided, negative opinions continue to be held in foreign media about the Tokyo Olympics scheduled for July this year. The New York Times said on the 16th, “The holding of the Tokyo Olympics in Japan is dark,” and said, “Tokyo and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) know that it is impossible to hold a safe tournament.”
“Japan spent more than 12 billion dollars in preparation for the Olympics, and spent billions of additional dollars in postponing the Olympics. If the Olympics cannot be held, it will be a major financial blow to Japan.” There will be many people who don’t do it.”
IOC Commissioner Dick Pound also recently expressed a view that “I am not sure of hosting the Olympics due to Corona 19.” The Associated Press, the British Guardian, and Sky Sports also suggested that hosting the July Olympics would be virtually difficult.
