“Securing future technology is a matter of survival. Read change and preoccupy the future.”

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited Samsung Research in Umyeon-dong, Seoul, which studies next-generation technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and 6th generation (6G) mobile communication, and emphasized this.

As the first business move in the new year, he visited the Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant on the 4th and inspected the network equipment business at the Suwon plant on the 5th, and continued on-site management for three consecutive days, focusing on securing future growth engines.

Vice-Chairman Lee presided over a meeting of the presidents’ team in the set division such as home appliances and smartphones at Samsung Research on the same day, and reviewed the future mid- to long-term strategies such as next-generation 6G mobile communication and AI research and development (R&D).

The meeting was attended by Hyun-Seok Kim, President of CE (Consumer Electronics) Division, Dong-jin Ko, President of IM (IT Mobile) Division, Yoon-Ho Choi, Head of Management Support Department, and Head of Samsung Research Research Institute Seung Hyun-jun.

At the meeting, Vice Chairman Lee said, “Let’s focus solely on enhancing the value of the company and contributing to society,” and said, “Let’s take tens of times and hundreds of times the responsibility as a leading company.”

Samsung Research, which Vice Chairman Lee visited on this day, is the heart of Samsung R&D, responsible for R&D of advanced technologies in promising fields in the future. It has a global AI center, a next-generation communication research center, and a software innovation center. In the field of AI, AI is innovated by grafting AI to smartphones, TVs, and home appliances, and research on 6G core technologies is being conducted in the next-generation communication field. In June of last year, Vice Chairman Lee recruited Professor Seung Hyun-jun, a professor at Princeton University in the United States, who is regarded as a world-renowned scholar in the field of AI, as the director (president) of Samsung Research.

It is interpreted as showing a willingness to grow system semiconductors including foundries and AI 6G into the next-generation first-class products following the current flagship memory semiconductors, TVs and smartphones.

Vice-Chairman Lee recently expressed a sense of crisis about Samsung’s future, saying, “I feel a sense of crisis while seeing the fall of leading telecommunications companies in Europe and the United States and the frightening pursuit of Chinese companies.”

In fact, Vice Chairman Lee has been focusing his efforts on discovering future food in recent years. The center of it is by far the next-generation mobile communications such as AI and 5G·6G. As soon as Vice Chairman Lee returned to the front line of management in 2018, he went on business trips to Europe and North America, interacting with global scholars in the AI field, grasping the latest trends, and directly recruiting key talents. In addition, they are actively interacting with the global mobile communication industry CEOs such as Verizon in the United States, Deutsche Telecom in Germany, NTT Docomo and KDDI in Japan, leading to results. In July of last year, Samsung Electronics also released a ‘6G white paper’ containing the next-generation 6G vision for the first time among major telecom companies around the world.

Vice-Chairman Lee is expected to continue his on-site management by visiting domestic businesses such as home appliances and smartphones next week, ahead of the sentence of repatriation to the government on the 18th. In spite of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), some observers will hold a meeting with the employees guarding the field to encourage the hard work of the employees. / Reporter Lee Jae-yong [email protected]
