Former national team coach Cho Jae-beom, who was accused of committing sexual assault against a female short track player Shim Seok-hee for three years, was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison at the first trial.

On the 21st, the 15th Criminal Division of the Suwon District Law (President Judge Cho Hyu-ok) sentenced Jo, who is accused of violating the law on sexual protection of children and adolescents, saying, “The guilt is heavy and the possibility of criticism is very high.” It also ordered a 200-hour sexual violence treatment program to be completed, and to restrict employment in children and youth-related organizations and welfare facilities for the disabled for 7 years.

From August 2014, when Shim was a sophomore in high school, to December 2017, just before the opening of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Jo was sexually assaulted or forcibly assaulted 30 times in 7 locations, including Taereung and Jincheon athletes’ villages and the ice rink of Korea Sports University. I was charged with the charges. The prosecution applied the alleged violation of the Act on Sexual Protection of Children and Adolescents to the charges prior to 2016, when the core player was a high school student.

“I hope that today’s judgment will help victims somewhere in our society to speak out,” Sim said through a statement. “I took courage with the idea that there should not be a victim like me again.” He added, “I sincerely hope that similar incidents will never occur in the future.” Sim was unable to appear in court on the same day because he was in self-quarantine due to an acquaintance’s confirmation of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).

The court judged that the statement made by Sim, which is the main evidence to prove Mr. Cho’s prosecution, was “clear and specific, so it is highly reliable.” The judge said, “The victim clearly states about the accused’s officetel, the leader of the Korean National Sports University ice rink, the furniture arrangement in the hotel where the defendant stayed, and the color of the futon.” It is difficult to say that it is natural and falsehood was involved.”

In addition, regarding Mr. Cho’s sexual offense against a juvenile player, “The victim took courage to expose the accused’s crime to the outside, but in the process of stating the case, he recalled the shameful memories. I had to have a very painful time,” he said. “The victim has been sexually assaulted and suffered serious mental damage since the childhood and adolescent period when it was necessary to form sexual identity and values.”

The judge said, “As a coach of the short track national team who coached the victims, the defendant committed sexual crimes with force using the victim’s inability to protest over the years. I said. In the process of investigation and trial, Mr. Cho consistently denied the charges, saying, “I admit that I have committed assault and violent language for disciplinary purposes, but I have never committed sexual crimes.”

Attorney Lim Sang-hyuk, an attorney on Sim’s side, said, “Sim was under investigation for 6 months and trial for 1 year and 6 months, and it was very painful, but I am glad that this process was recognized as a ruling.” “I think that the sentence of six months is very low compared to the social impact and the damage the victim suffered.”

On the other hand, Mr. Cho was handed over to trial for injuring Sim by habitually assaulting Sim, separate from sexual crimes, and was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison at an appeals trial in January 2019, and his sentence was confirmed.
