The last minute behind the scenes of Samsung Heavy Industries is fierce. It succeeded in winning an order for the rush, and in just three days, it was close to the 7 penny ridge of this year’s target by sweeping a whopping KRW 1.63 trillion worth of work. It is expected to be a message of hope for the community facing the worst barley peak at the end of the year due to the long order gap that occurred in the aftermath of Corona 19 at the beginning of the year.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 23rd that it has won orders for four LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers from shipowners in Africa. The total contract amount is 740 million dollars, which is equivalent to 815 billion won in our money. Including 4 vessels of the same ship type that were ordered on the 21st and 22nd, it would be worth 8, 1,630 billion won.

The LNG carrier ordered this time is a next-generation ship that minimizes cargo loss by installing a reliquefaction system in a membrane (Mark-III Flex) type cargo hold.

Samsung Heavy Industries’ own smart ship technology’SVESSEL’ is also installed. Svessel is a system that supports economical and safe operation by integrating and managing all data related to ships with the latest ICT (information communication) technology based on a cloud data center. It provides optimal navigation (route) planning, real-time equipment status monitoring, fault diagnosis, and land remote control functions.

It was built at the Geoje Shipyard in Gyeongnam and is expected to be delivered sequentially until May 2024.

Thanks to the year-end order rally, Samsung Heavy Industries’ cumulative order volume this year jumped to 36 vessels and $4.8 billion. This is 65% of this year’s target ($8.4 billion). This is more than expected considering that orders received only $1.1 billion as of the end of October due to the aftermath of Corona 19.

It is slower than expected, but thanks to the gradual recovery of the market in the second half of the year. According to Clarkson Research, an analysis agency for shipbuilding and shipping markets in the UK, orders worldwide from July to November this year reached 7.5 million CGT, exceeding the first half order (697 million CGT). In particular, orders for LNG carriers, the flagship ship of the Korean shipbuilding Big 3, have risen markedly. Samsung Heavy Industries, which won orders for 18 LNG carriers in 2018 and 2019, reaffirmed its competitiveness by winning orders for 19 LNG carriers this year.

Thanks to this, the order balance, which represents the remaining work, also increased significantly. It fell to $18.6 billion at the end of August, but has recently increased to $22.2 billion. Of these, high-value LNG carriers account for nearly half of $10.4 billion, which is positive in terms of profitability.

An official from Samsung Heavy Industries said, “As global environmental regulations, especially greenhouse gas emission regulations, are strengthened, ship orders are expected to increase further due to the increase in LNG demand.” Emphasized.
