Italy-UK joint study… Estimation of the duration of’fire flow

“Most of the 2,000 victims died of toxic gas suffocation”

Research shows that extremely hot volcanic ash and toxic gases erupted for about 15 minutes during the eruption of Vesuvius, which made Pompeii of the ancient Roman Empire into ashes in 79 AD.

A joint Italian-UK research team estimated the duration of pyroclastic flow at the time of the eruption, reported daily by La Repubblica and others on the 22nd (local time).

The pyroclastic flow is the most destructive and fatal phenomenon in the event of a volcanic eruption, as lava, volcanic ash, and volcanic gas erupt and flow down.

As the entire Pompeii near Vesuvius was quickly destroyed, some 2,000 deaths were caused by pyrotechnics, and the researchers estimated that most of the victims at the time were suffocated by poisonous volcanic gas at home or on the street.

For the 15 minutes or so, the people of Pompeii experienced a living hell that is unlikely to end forever.

In this study, the University of Bari in Italy, the Italian National Institute of Geological Volcanoes (INGV), and a geological research team from Edinburgh, UK participated.

The researchers say they have created a mathematical simulation model that can estimate the duration of the pyroclastic flow based on the volcanic debris remaining in the Pompeii ruins.

An official of the research team pointed out that “this study provides very important information to understand the nature of Vesuvius eruption activity and to reconstruct the situation in Pompeii after the explosion.”

Pompeii, which had been buried under the ground for more than 1,500 years, was excavated in earnest when the ruins were excavated during the construction of a waterway in the 16th century, and now, it has reached a level that can give a glimpse of its past form. Even now, it is difficult to know the scale of the ancient Rome as various relics and ruins are being excavated.

The Pompeii ruins were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 due to their excellent preservation and great archaeological value that gives a glimpse into the lives of the people at that time. It is also a tourist attraction visited by around 4 million domestic and foreign visitors a year.
