The condition to use the function is to wear the’Apple Watch’
Some point out that “only the user burden increases”
The latest iPhone doesn’t have’fingerprint recognition’
In the iOS 14.5 developer beta version released by Apple on the 2nd, users can unlock the iPhone using’Face ID’ (face recognition) even while wearing a mask that covers both the mouth and nose.
Face unlocking has been the most widely used feature of Android phone users as well as iPhone users in recent years. This is because it is simple compared to password and fingerprint recognition.
However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it became difficult to use this function from outside as the whole people wore masks. For this reason, many users mainly use fingerprint recognition instead of face recognition.
The problem is Apple users. Users of the latest iPhone X and later releases cannot use fingerprint recognition. Except for the’iPhone SE 2nd Generation’ released last year, all of them have Face ID installed. However, I couldn’t use Face ID with a mask, so I had to enter a password or unlock it with the mask down.
In the end, Apple took steps to unlock the iPhone even when wearing a mask. However, you must purchase and wear an Apple Watch. This is because it can be used only by selecting’Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch’ in iPhone settings. The certified Apple Watch must be worn on the wrist, and the distance between devices must be close. When unlocked, the Apple Watch vibrates.
Also, this feature can only be used to unlock the iPhone. In the case of the App Store, iTunes, and Safari password auto-completion functions, a password input window is displayed while wearing a mask.
Unlike Apple, Apple’s biggest competitor in the smartphone market Samsung Electronics (005930)Annually develops an improved fingerprint recognition system with built-in displays and installs them in the latest smartphones. The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner installed in the Galaxy S21 series is also 1.7 times larger than the previous one, and the speed is also improved by 50%.
Eventually, Apple is expected to revive the Touch ID function that utilizes the fingerprint scanner built into the display along with Face ID in the’iPhone 13′ to be released this year. On the 29th of last month (local time), the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Apple is developing an optical fingerprint recognition function for the iPhone 13 series.
However, users who purchased the latest iPhone models between 2017 and 2020 can still use Face ID without an Apple Watch. Eventually, it is expected that many iPhone users will purchase Apple Watch, which will greatly help in the growth of the wearable market that Apple is focusing on.
