IPhone 12, Galaxy S20 public announcement subsidies… Aim for Christmas and the end of the year

Ahead of Christmas and the year-end and New Year holidays, mobile carriers have gradually increased their disclosure subsidies and additional subsidies to attract 5G telecommunications (5G) customers.

According to the telecommunications industry on the 23rd, public subsidies for the iPhone 12, Apple’s first 5G smartphone, nearly doubled. On the 19th, LG Uplus raised the publicly announced subsidies for the general iPhone 12 model from 212,000 won to 430,000 won depending on the plan. Previously, it was 84,000~229,000 won. As the publicly announced subsidies rose, the additional subsidies (15% of the publicly disclosed subsidies) paid out from distribution channels also jumped. If the public subsidy is received up to 430,000 won, additional subsidies are applied at 64,500 won and a total of 490,500 won will be discounted.

KT recently raised the publicly disclosed subsidies for the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which was 292,000~600,000 won, to 258,000~700,000 won. The factory price was 1595,000 won at the time of its launch in February this year, but now it has dropped to 1298,000 won. If the public subsidy is discounted up to 700,000 won and an additional subsidy of 105,000 won is added, the actual purchase price drops to 493,000 won. The actual purchase price of the limited edition Galaxy S20 Plus Bulletproof Boy Scouts (BTS) edition has also dropped significantly. The factory price was cut from 1353,000 won to 12,48,500. The maximum amount of publicly disclosed subsidies has recently risen from 480,000 won to 600,000 won. At the beginning of this month, SK Telecom raised the public subsidies for the iPhone 12 to a maximum of 420,000 won and the public subsidies for the Galaxy S20 Ultra to a maximum of 580,000 won.

In response, the Korea Communications Commission said, “The government is actively encouraging the increase of public announcement subsidies for telecommunication companies.” Nak-joon Koh, the terminal distribution investigation officer of the Korea Communications Commission, explained, “As telecommunications companies sprayed illegal subsidies to give preferential treatment to some customers, it became difficult to do business, so we switched to marketing that raises publicly available subsidies.”

In addition, regarding the concern that illegal subsidies may be rampant at some distribution stores aimed at the end of the year, “we are strengthening monitoring with the possibility that illegal subsidies will be spread through online malls, etc., and if any deviations are discovered, administrative guidance He said, “We are guiding you through.”
