On that day, Prime Minister Chung held a state affairs inspection and coordination meeting at the R&D Center and met with representatives from the automobile industry, including Chairman Chung, to examine and discuss future car technologies. Prime Minister Jung directly looked at E-GMP, Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicle platform, and tested the Ioniq 5, the first electric vehicle to which E-GMP was applied. On the 23rd of this month, Prime Minister Chung and Chairman Chung boarded side by side in the back seat of the Ioniq 5, which is scheduled to be released worldwide. Prime Minister Jeong is also known to have driven the Genesis G70, an internal combustion locomotive.

Chairman Jeong also took Prime Minister Jeong in the passenger seat of the Exient hydrogen electric truck and drove himself to test drive. After the test drive was over, Prime Minister Chung reportedly said, “It was much better to ride an electric car (the ride quality),” and “It seems that the era of electric cars will come soon”. Chairman Jeong answered with the intention that “Hyundai Motor Group is working hard on the development of electric and hydrogen vehicles,” an industry official said.

Prior to the test drive, Prime Minister Chung held a luncheon with Chairman Chung, Man-gi Chung, Chairman of the Korea Automobile Industry Association, and Won-Seok Oh, Chairman of the Automobile Parts Foundation to discuss industry issues. Chairman Chung Man-ki explained the current situation of Ssangyong Motor and emphasized the need for government support. “Ssangyong Motor actively cooperated with the government such as reinstatement of the dismissal,” Chung said. “This time, the Industrial Bank must clearly give a (support) message.”

Chairman Chung also urged that GM Korea and Renault Samsung Motors, which are struggling with management difficulties, should establish an infrastructure so that they can produce electric vehicles in Korea. It is reported that Prime Minister Chung and Chairman Chung agree that not only Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, but also other automakers must conduct stable management in order to develop the automobile industry and establish a healthy automobile market.

“The internal combustion locomotive and hybrid vehicle ecosystem should also be considered and systematically shifted to the electric vehicle era,” said Chung, the president of the association. Prime Minister Chung is known to have emphasized the importance of securing future car technology and said that he wished the Korean automobile industry to become the best in the world.
