Although the era of domestic electric cars was met, there is a prospect that the’civil war’ between Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, which continued from internal combustion locomotives, will continue.
According to Hyundai Motor Company and Kia on the 28th, Hyundai Motor Company’s first exclusive electric car Ioniq 5 is scheduled to be released next month. In March, Kia’s CV will be released.
The two vehicles are reported to be released in the European market first and then domestically in April and July, respectively. In view of the fact that the new car effect of newly launched vehicles is usually maintained for about three months, it seems that the timing of the domestic launch was adjusted to prevent a collision between the two vehicles.
However, Hyundai and Kia have a history of continuing civil war in the passenger car market in the same class. In semi-large sedans, the Granger and K7, in mid-sized sedans the Sonata and K5. The semi-mid-sized sedan Avante and K3 are also in competition, as are the mid-sized sports utility vehicles (SUV) Santa Fe and Sorento.
These vehicles share platforms and powertrains. Although it has differentiating factors such as indoor and outdoor design, it is competing every year because there is no significant difference at the time of release.

Unlike existing electric vehicles, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia CV are exclusive electric vehicles equipped with a dedicated platform E-GMP. In the case of an electric car that was forcibly fitted to the platform of an internal combustion engine, there were structural limitations, but it is evaluated that the use of a platform exclusively for electric vehicles has improved efficiency and safety.
The two vehicles share the Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicle platform E-GMP. Accordingly, there is no significant difference in power performance or mileage. E-GMP can drive up to 500km per charge. In addition, it is equipped with an 800V charging system and can be charged to 80% within 18 minutes by using a super fast charger. In a hurry, it is possible to drive 100km by charging in just 5 minutes. It also supports V2L, a two-way charging method.
The biggest difference between Ionic 5 and CV is design. Ioniq 5 was produced with the motif of the concept car ’45’, a modern reinterpretation of the design of the first domestic car’Pony Coupe’. Straight and strong lines were used, and the headlights and taillights were also sharp squares. It is explained that a panametric pixel design that penetrates analog and digital was applied to the shape of pixels, which are the smallest units that make up an image.

CV is known to have a muscular coupe design by sharing the concept car Futureron and Imagine design. Kia has announced that Kia’s own innovative design will be applied to the CV. In the recently captured test car, a bonnet with an emphasis on voluminous feel and a lower headlight are confirmed. Accordingly, Kia’s family look,’Tiger Face’, is also expected to change.
Differences in the interior space according to the design are also observed. The total length, width, and height of the IONIC 5 leaked abroad are 4640, 1890, 1600 mm, and the distance between the axes, which is the standard for measuring the indoor space, reaches 3000 mm. The Avante-sized vehicle has more space than the Grandeur thanks to the reduction of the front overhang (between the rear bumper and the rear axle) with the engine removed. However, some analysis suggests that the trunk space will be rather small as the rear overhang takes the form of a short hatchback.
On the other hand, it is known that the CV adopts a coupe design and the rear overhang is longer than the Ioniq 5. As much as the platform is shared, it is expected to provide the same level of interior space as the Ioniq 5, but there will be plenty of luggage space in the trunk.
