(Geneva = Yonhap News) Correspondent Eun-jin Lim = The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on the 6th (local time) that North Korea had not officially announced the absence of the Tokyo Olympics.

However, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said it had received the relevant information.

An IOC spokesman responded to Yonhap News’ inquiries, “The IOC has not received any formal request from North Korea’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) to waive his (Tokyo) Olympic Games obligation under the Olympic Charter.”

“Unfortunately, North Korea’s NOC was not in a position to hold a conference call despite several requests from the IOC,” he said.

According to the Olympic Charter, NOCs of each country are obligated to send their own athletes to participate in the Olympics.

However, a spokesman for the IPC based in Bonn, Germany, said, “We have received confirmation from North Korea’s National Paralympic Committee (NPC) that it will not participate in Tokyo 2020.”

He added, “It goes without saying that IPC wants as many countries as possible to participate in Tokyo 2020, and that it is working hard with NPCs of each country to maximize participation in the Olympic qualifiers, etc.”

“We are working closely with Tokyo 2020, the IOC, the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on measures to hold a safe game this summer.”

Previously, North Korea held a general meeting of the Korean Olympic Committee in Pyongyang on the 25th of last month, and decided not to participate in the Tokyo Olympics, which will be held in July to protect athletes from the Corona 19 situation.
