Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor company, announced that it will invest 20 billion dollars (about 22 trillion won) to establish two new semiconductor factories in Arizona.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced the plan on the 23rd (local time). Even so,” he said.

Two new factories will be installed on existing sites in Arizona. In addition to Arizona, Intel currently operates factories in New Mexico, Massachusetts, and Oregon.

Gelsinger’s CEO emphasized that Intel will begin its role as a’foundry’ with the first official ceremony since taking office in February.

Foundry refers to a company that specializes in producing designed semiconductors. Intel named its foundry subsidiary’Intel Foundry Services’ and announced that the current senior vice president, Landhir Thakur, will be the representative.

Intel CEO Gelsinger predicts that the foundry business will be worth $100 billion by 2025. Intel said it has received support from potential corporate customers such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft (MS) and Qualcomm.

This measure came amid a severe shortage of semiconductors around the world in recent years. Intel’s new factory in the US is aimed at TSMC and Samsung Electronics, Taiwan Semiconductor, which dominated the foundries of global semiconductors, Reuters reported.

In the news, Intel’s stock price surged 7.4% at 5:56 pm in New York after-hours trading. Intel closed the regular market down 3.28% on that day.
