Intel introduced a new processor to preoccupy the 5th generation mobile communication (5G) network market. It is a strategy to widen the gap with competitors through a central processing unit (CPU) product line optimized for 5G networks.

Intel unveiled the 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor on the 7th. According to Intel, the new process is optimized for high-performance computing systems such as 5G, cloud, database, and artificial intelligence (AI). Compared to the latest CPUs of competitors, it boasts 1.5 times faster information processing performance.

Intel is strengthening the server CPU market to preempt the rapidly growing 5G, cloud, and data center markets. The server CPU is essential to be compatible with the existing data center. The transition to a new CPU is even evaluated as near impossible.

According to market research firm Mercury Research, Intel recorded 92.9% of the server CPU market in the fourth quarter of last year. Its rival AMD’s server CPU share is only 7.1%.

As the amount of data increases rapidly due to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), it is becoming more important to process data quickly and send and receive data. In this situation, Intel believes that the competitiveness of CPUs specialized in 5G networks is important, and it will maintain the dominance of the server CPU market.

The newly introduced 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor has built-in artificial intelligence acceleration function. It is unique among server CPUs. Artificial intelligence built into the CPU optimizes the software to improve performance and productivity.

Security has also been strengthened. Intel provides a safe and fast system through separate software that protects communication between channel settings and 5G control functions. An Intel official said, “As a result of applying the new process by telecommunication service companies, it was confirmed that 5G performance improved by up to 42%.”

Intel is also a leading supplier of semiconductors for networks, and has also created a broad ecosystem to transform networks. It maximizes the highest processor performance by combining a network-optimized CPU, an Ethernet adapter, and a software toolkit.

“In a widely deployed 5G network environment, the 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor provides an average of 62% better performance than the previous generation,” said Seung-ju Na, managing director of Intel Korea. “We will actively support you so that you can provide options and introduce the technology you want faster.”
