President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jeong-suk visited a traditional fish market in Soraepo-gu, Namdong-gu, Incheon, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday on the 10th. Soraepo-gu market was destroyed in a fire in March 2017 and reopened as a modern facility in December last year after three years and nine months. President Moon, who was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s presidential election at the time, toured the scene of the fire and promised to take measures.

President Moon and Mrs. Kim arrived at Sorae Port Market at 10 am on the same day. Inside and outside President Moon toured the market and bought seafood, salted fish, and dried fish crabs with Onnuri gift certificates, and chatted with market merchants suffering from coronavirus. He met again with the merchant he met during the fire in 2017 and exchanged regards.

After the fire, the merchants of the Sorae Port market formed a cooperative, purchased the site with local special grant tax and local government funds, and built a new building to provide modern facilities. Until then, it was’unlicensed’ for 40 years, but in December of last year, it was officially recognized as a traditional market by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and Onnuri gift certificates can be used.

During the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays, President Moon and his family visited traditional markets and met with merchants. Ahead of Chuseok last year, I visited Inwang Market in Hongje-dong, Seodaemun-gu, which I often visited when I lived at my home in Hongeun-dong before the presidential election, and bought sashimi products such as apples, chestnuts, fish, beef and spinach.

President Moon added the meaning of encouraging merchants in Sorae Port, who have prepared modern facilities to visit traditional markets ahead of this New Year’s Day. President Moon and his wife bought 100 sets of salted fish that day, and they plan to deliver them as a holiday present to the residents of the village in Manseok-dong, Incheon. Residents of Manseokchon and the homeless, residents of free food service centers, and members of Haein Church have been doing good deeds for 13 years, starting with donating 870,000 won in donation in 2008 to the fruit of love in order to help neighbors in need.

Mrs. Kim brought the container used at the official residence and purchased fish market items such as crabs. It is intended to participate in the’In-Container Campaign’, a campaign to reduce the use of disposable plastics.
