Industry Minister Sung Yun-mo, on-site inspection of Daesan Fuel Cell Power Plant

[월간수소경제 이종수 기자] Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Sung Yun-mo visited the Daesan Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant site on the morning of the 8th and requested a safe and clean power plant operation.

This visit is the first hydrogen economy related trip after the enforcement of the hydrogen law (February 5). They checked the status of safety management of fuel cell power plants, a major pillar of the use of hydrogen energy, and encouraged the hard work of employees who are striving to supply and supply electricity in winter.

The Daesan Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant is the world’s first commercial power plant that utilizes’by-product hydrogen’ as an energy source, and was jointly established by Hanwha Energy, Korea East-West Power, and Doosan Fuel Cell, and began operating in earnest from June of last year.

The Daesan Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant can stably supply 400,000 MWh of electricity that can be used by 160,000 households per year to nearby areas.

It has a high operating rate of 97% on average, and has been operating safely throughout the entire process of’hydrogen production-transport-use’ without a single safety accident such as hydrogen leakage.

In particular, it is also playing the role of a so-called’ultra-large air purifier’ by purifying ultra-fine dust in the air through a fine filter installed in the generator and supplying clean air that can breathe for about 350,000 adults.

The supply of hydrogen fuel cells in Korea reached about 600MW by the end of last year, and has grown into the largest power generation market, accounting for 43% of the global supply.

The government plans to supply 15GW of fuel cells for power generation (domestic 8GW, cumulative basis) by 2040 and foster it as an export industry along with domestic eco-friendly energy supply. To support this, it has decided to promote the introduction of a system for mandatory hydrogen power generation, and a plan for reorganization of related systems is being prepared.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Seong Yun-mo said, “The world’s first implementation of the hydrogen law has established the foundation for a full-fledged hydrogen economy, and hydrogen fuel cells, an eco-friendly power plant, will lead Korea’s carbon neutrality in the future.” We will spare no interest and support so that we can continue to maintain the world’s No. 1 position in the market.”
