The National Statistical Office said last year that industrial production was down 0.8% from a year ago.
This is the first time that industrial production has grown negatively since related statistics began in 2000.
Manufacturing production increased even in the aftermath of the coronavirus, but the problem was the service industry.
Production in the manufacturing industry increased 0.5% last year, mainly for semiconductors and mechanical equipment, but production in the service industry fell 2%.
In particular, production in the arts, sports, and leisure sectors declined by 33%, and in-person service production declined by 18.5%.
On the other hand, as stocks and real estate investment continued, the production of services such as finance, insurance and real estate increased.
Consumption has also decreased.
Retail sales, which show consumption, also declined for the first time in 17 years after the card crash in 2003.
Durable goods such as automobiles increased by 10.9%, but semi-durable goods such as clothing decreased by 12.2%, resulting in a decrease in overall retail sales of 0.2%.
Facility investment increased by 6% as investment in transportation equipment and semiconductors continued.
However, the National Statistical Office said last month that production increased by 0.5%, with production of semiconductors and mechanical equipment slowing more than 10%.

“In the case of production in the mining industry, exports are showing good signs recently. In particular, semiconductors and mechanical equipment have good business conditions…”
Last month, consumption also increased by 0.2% and investment also increased by 0.9%.
However, due to the strengthening of distancing following the third coronavirus outbreak, the production of service industries centered on lodging and food and beverage businesses turned to decline again in four months.
