India, which produces about 60% of the world’s vaccines, decided to further expand its vaccine production capacity through the first summit of’Quad’, a consultative group with the United States, Japan, and Australia.

According to Times of India and foreign media on the 13th, the four quad nations held their first summit the day before and decided to strengthen fair vaccine access in ASEAN and Indo-Pacific regions.

These included a plan to fund Indian pharmaceutical companies to increase their vaccine production by at least 1 billion doses (one dose) by the end of next year, and the establishment of a working group to help distribute the vaccine.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted after the summit, saying, “We have launched a groundbreaking quad partnership to ensure safe vaccine access by solidarity in the war with Corona 19.” India’s vaccine production capacity will expand.”

“Today’s dialogue on vaccines, climate change and emerging technologies has made Quad a positive force for global good and peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.”

This is an assessment that China has a strong response to its vaccine diplomacy by supplying its own synovac vaccine to developing countries.

Indian Foreign Minister Harsi Vardan said, “At this meeting, we have agreed to produce a vaccine for the United States in India,” he said. “This is what India requested to counter the expanding vaccine diplomacy China is expanding.”

According to a quad document, Reuters reported that the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) will finance Indian pharmaceutical company’Biological E’to produce at least 1 billion doses of vaccine by the end of next year.

AFP news agency reported that the White House announced that “India Biologic E will produce at least 1 billion doses by the end of next year, focusing on the US Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine, which requires only one dose.”

In addition, for the expansion of vaccine production capacity in India, not only the US International Development Finance Corporation, but also Japan financially supported it, and Australia also provided 7 million dollars (875 million dollars) to Southeast Asian vaccine subsidies. He added that it was decided to increase it by KRW 100 million.

The Indian government has approved urgent use of two vaccines: AstraZeneca vaccine, which is commissioned by the world’s largest vaccine company Serum Institute (SII), and a vaccine from local company Barat Biotech.

Most of the overseas supply is AstraZeneca vaccine. Barat Biotech is also promoting export expansion to Zimbabwe.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India announced the day before that it has supplied nearly 60 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to 69 countries around the world in the last 50 days.
