(New Delhi = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Young-hyun = While some European countries have temporarily suspended vaccination against the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) AstraZeneca due to concerns about side effects, India has ordered 100 million doses of this vaccine as scheduled. Continues.

According to Indian media such as PTI on the 17th, the Indian government recently ordered an additional 100 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine (Coby Shield) from Serum Institute (SII), a local company and the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer.

SII is commissioned to produce AstraZeneca vaccine in India. In India, only two types of vaccines are currently approved: AstraZeneca vaccine and a vaccine developed by local company Barat Biotech.

Regarding the AstraZeneca vaccine, some European countries have temporarily stopped vaccination for some manufacturing units or all quantities, as reports of “blood clots” have been formed in some vaccinated vaccinators and death cases have also emerged.

In addition to securing the vaccine, the authorities are investigating their own side effects.

NK Arora, an advisor to the Indian government task force (TF) on the response to vaccine side effects, recently said, “In India, there have been no cases of blood clots after vaccination with AstraZeneca, but we have decided to conduct an in-depth investigation on the side effects of vaccination.”

India started vaccinating the public for chronic comorbidities aged 60 or older or 45 years or older starting this month, following medical staff, police, and military personnel.

The authorities plan to finish vaccinating a total of 300 million people by July to August, so a large amount of vaccine is in need. The number of people who completed the first vaccination by this day is about 35 million.

The Indian government is also pushing for approval of additional vaccines.

It is known that the vaccines that are likely to be additionally approved are foreign-made vaccines such as Russian Sputnik V and NovaVax vaccine, as well as vaccines being developed by local companies, Xides Cadillac, Biologic E, and Gennova, respectively.

In particular, Gland Pharma, which has a plant in Hyderabad in southern India, announced the day before that it plans to supply 252 million Sputnik Vs from the fourth quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, the number of new confirmed cases in India per day fell below 10,000 at the beginning of last month, and has recently skyrocketed to the mid-20,000 level.

In particular, in the case of the western Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is the central city of the Indian economy, the situation is deteriorating, with 17,864 new cases reported on that day.

On that day, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in India was 14,38,464 (based on world meter).

The world ranking of the cumulative number of confirmed cases, which was second only to the United States, recently fell to third place after Brazil. This is because the rapid increase in confirmed cases in Brazil has become much more serious than in India.
