China’s state-run Global Times reported on the 18th that anti-Chinese sentiment rose in Myanmar, where the military coup took place, and while local Chinese factories were attacked, some Chinese companies are considering withdrawal to their home countries.

A key official of a Chinese company in Myanmar said in the Global Times on the day that “a lot of companies are setting up emergency response plans locally,” and “a plan to withdraw from among several options is included.” He also said, “Internal discussions are underway regarding the closing of business in Myanmar.”

Another company official said, “We have not been notified of the withdrawal of employees from the authorities. Some companies are considering returning to their home country as one of the options, considering the increasingly deteriorating situation in Myanmar.” In fact, a Chinese state-owned company in the field of hydropower has sent some Chinese employees back to their home countries to escape the coup chaos earlier this month, one source said.

However, the media reported that the government has not ordered the withdrawal of state-owned companies, but only discusses withdrawal at the level of individual companies taking into account the deteriorating situation in Myanmar. Earlier, it refuted the Hong Kong South China Morning Post’s report that the Chinese government ordered the withdrawal of non-core workers from their own country sent to state-owned companies in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, according to an announcement by the Chinese embassy in Myanmar, on the 14th, 32 Chinese production facilities in Yangon, Myanmar, were attacked by unknown people, causing a fire. It is reported that the accident caused property damage of 240 million yuan (about 42 billion won). In this regard, the Chinese embassy said, “I hope to take measures to protect the safety of the Chinese people.”

Some parts of China, such as the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, are pointing to Western forces such as the United States behind the attacks on their own companies. It is alleged that the US government, which is struggling with China, mobilized local forces in Myanmar to instigate the attack. However, in Myanmar, suspicions have also been raised that terrorists from the military are trying to create negative public opinion among the protesters of the rebels by holding hands with China to’self-play’.

Meanwhile, as antipathy against China, which did not participate in the international condemnation of the Myanmar coup, increased rapidly, the local Korean association distributed’Taegeukgi’ to Korean-owned factories, and it is known that they tried to crack down on damage so that they would not be mistaken for China.
