More than three out of 10 medical institutions were evaluated as first-class institutions that use antibiotics at an appropriate level during surgery. The more advanced medical institutions were, the better they were.

On the 31st, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service released the results of the’Evaluation of the use of prophylactic antibiotics for the 7th (2015) surgery’ on the 31st. Since 2007, Simpyeongwon has been evaluating the selection of antibiotics to be administered annually, the timing of administration, and indications for medical institutions. It is to prevent infection at the surgical site and to prevent misuse and abuse of antibiotics.

According to this, as a result of evaluating the timing and duration of antibiotic administration and selection of antibiotics for 15 types of surgeries such as gastric surgery, colon surgery, and heart surgery, among 759 medical institutions, 31.9% (242) received the highest grade 1. It was then counted as 2nd grade 293 (38.6%), 3rd grade 179 (23.6%), 4th grade 37 (4.8%), and 5th grade 8 (1.1%).

The 31.9% of first-class medical institutions increased by 5%p compared to the 6th evaluation (26.9%) conducted in 2014. This is a 2.2-fold increase compared to the 2nd evaluation (14.5% in 2008), which began to classify the grades.

Kim Seon-dong, head of the 2nd evaluation office for Shim Pyeong-won, explained, “It is the result of the efforts of medical institutions to use antibiotics appropriately along with the expansion of surgery to be evaluated twice.”

By type of medical institution, all 43 high-ranking general hospitals nationwide received the first grade. Among the 234 general hospitals, 95, or 40.6%, were rated as 1st grade. Then, there were 92 places in the 2nd grade (39.2%), 39 places in the 3rd grade (16.7%), 6 places in the 4th grade (2.6%), and 2 places in the 5th grade (0.9%).

Hospital-level was the lowest, with only 104, 21.6% of the total 482, receiving the first grade. The 2nd grade was 201 places (41.8%), 3rd grade 140 places (29.0%), 4th grade 31 places (6.4%), 5th grade 6 places (1.2%), etc. In the case of hospital-level, compared to the past second evaluation, the proportion of first-class institutions has improved significantly from 2.8% to 21.6%.

An official from Shim Pyeong-won said, “It is very encouraging that the quality of medical care is gradually improving in small and medium-sized hospitals, where the environment is relatively weak compared to large hospitals.”

Detailed evaluation results can be found on the website of Simpyeongwon from the 1st of next month.
