It was found that the number of Internet of Things (IoT) patents, which are essential for technologies such as autonomous vehicles and smart homes, have recently increased significantly.
On the 1st, the Korean Intellectual Property Office announced that the number of domestic patent applications related to the IoT platform increased from 20 in 2013 to 115 last year, nearly six times over the past seven years.
By detailed type of IoT platform, the most common management platform for service use and application development was 213 cases (46%). This was followed by a computer server, a platform that analyzes and processes data in the cloud (184 cases), a communication management platform between devices (50 cases), and an edge device management platform (12 cases). In terms of service standards using the IoT platform, healthcare was the largest with 34 cases, followed by disaster prevention and prevention (31 cases), energy (28 cases), transportation and transportation (26 cases), and smart home (22 cases).
Recently, as domestic and foreign IT companies enter the IoT-based application service market such as autonomous vehicles and smart homes, IoT platform technology that connects surrounding objects such as mobiles and automobiles is attracting attention. Currently, the IoT platform is rapidly growing after the research stage in early 2010. It is advantageous to secure large-scale industrial data and has a high market preemption effect, so once it takes the lead, it has a great influence on related industries.
Park Seong-ho, the secretary of the Internet of Things Review Division at the Intellectual Property Office, said, “In a situation where fierce competition has already begun for the rapidly growing IoT platform market, it is necessary for Korean companies to continue securing strong patents in order to preoccupy the global market.”
