Due to the supply shortage of semiconductors for vehicles, which has continued since last year, domestic and overseas automakers have started to cut production, and the domestic automotive and semiconductor industry has decided to cooperate to expand the production base for vehicle semiconductors and jointly develop technologies.

On the 17th, the Korea Automobile Industry Association (KAMA) and the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA) held a fabless technology exchange meeting for semiconductor demanders for vehicles. At the event Hyundai Motor (005380)·Kia·Korea GM·Renault Samsung·Ssangyong Motor (003620)With automakers, etc. Mando (204320)Part manufacturers such as LS Automotive and Corens, and automotive semiconductor design companies (fabless) such as Neo Wine, Belive Micron, Silicon R&D, Lanix, and Image Technology participated.

The two associations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for systematic cooperation at the technology exchange meeting on this day. Through the MOU, the automobile and semiconductor industry decided to promote regular operation of a partnership to discover cooperation tasks such as ▲expansion of the semiconductor production base for vehicles and joint technology development between companies, ▲support for joint evaluation and certification of semiconductor prototypes for vehicles, and ▲’Tech Day’.

On this day, a small exhibition was also held to introduce technologies and products developed by domestic fabless. In this exhibition, which 10 domestic fablesses participated, lidar sensors, microcontroller units (MCU), security ICs, image processing ICs for ADAS, NFC SoCs for doors, etc. were exhibited, as well as consultations with automobile industry officials.

KAMA Chairman Chung Man-ki said, “The domestic automobile industry imports 98% of the semiconductors for vehicles. In the era of autonomous vehicles, more than 2,000 semiconductors will be installed per unit.” Chairman Chung also said, “For this, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation between the demand industry and fabless and foundry.” We need to support the promotion of the semiconductor equipment industry,” he added.
