Incheon City will leap forward as a hub city for the hydrogen industry, the future national growth engine. On the 2nd, Incheon City, SK, and Hyundai Motor Company signed a’Business Agreement on Mutual Cooperation for Building the Hydrogen Industry Foundation’ at SK Incheon Petrochemical in Seo-gu, Incheon I decided to gather strength.

The government held the ‘3rd Hydrogen Economy Committee’ at SK Incheon Petrochemical, presided over by Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun, and discussed private investment plans and government support plans.

At the meeting, five group companies, including SK, Hyundai Motor, POSCO, Hanwha, and Hyosung, decided to invest 43 trillion won in hydrogen economy by 2030, and the government decided to actively support the investments of these private companies systematically so that they can achieve results did.

In particular, in connection with the meeting on the day, Incheon City, SK E&S, Hyundai Motor Company, and Incheon Seo-gu decided to cooperate with each other to build a foundation for the hydrogen industry centered on Incheon.

SK Incheon Petrochemical plans to build a facility that can supply 30,000 tons of liquefied hydrogen by 2023 using by-product hydrogen produced at the plant (hydrogen incidental to the petrochemical process).

30,000 tons of liquefied hydrogen is the world’s largest, and it is the fuel necessary for 75,000 hydrogen cars,’Nexo’, to travel around the globe at the same time. Upon completion of this facility, by-product hydrogen purified with high purity can be processed into liquid form and supplied to the metropolitan area.

The city of Incheon supports SK’s mass hydrogen production system and plans to build a bio-by-product hydrogen production cluster in the West, in which related companies are integrated. Hyundai Motor Company also decided to actively participate in demonstration projects to build the foundation for a by-product hydrogen cluster promoted by Incheon City. It plans to actively cooperate with Incheon City in fostering the hydrogen car industry and supplying hydrogen cars.

To support such private investment, the government will introduce a clean hydrogen certification system and support various types of green hydrogen research and development (R&D) projects.

Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun said, “The government will establish a comprehensive support system that encompasses the production, transportation, and utilization of liquefied hydrogen in order to supply cheap hydrogen, which is the basis of the hydrogen economy.”

Incheon Mayor Park Nam-chun emphasized that “In order to respond to climate change and realize carbon neutrality, the supply of hydrogen energy is not an option, it is essential.” “Incheon City will make more efforts to build a hydrogen industry ecosystem based on an optimal hydrogen production base.” did.

The event was attended by major executives of SK and Hyundai Motors, including SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun, SK Incheon Petrochemical President Choi Yoon-seok, and Hyundai Mobis CEO Cho Sung-hwan. → Related article 3 pages (Incheon has emerged as a major investment destination for Korean conglomerates’ hydrogen industry)
