One of the highlights of the US presidential inauguration ceremony is the reading of a congratulatory poem. Robert Frost (1874~1963), also known in Korea for’The Road Not Taken’, also read his own poem at the inauguration ceremony of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. It is an honor given to the best poet of the time and to the poet who is the symbol of the times. On the 20th (local time), Biden’s choice was different. The person on the podium this year’s inauguration ceremony is Amanda Dagorman, an African-American woman who has just turned 22. He is the youngest congratulatory reader in American history.

Gorman appeared right after President Biden’s speech. The heart of the message of’The Hill We Climb’ he recited over about five minutes was integration. The 3937 characters contain the message of going beyond conflict and division to unity and harmony. Everyone, including the couple of President Biden, listened with breath, and after reading, Gorman emerged as a star. His Twitter account currently exceeds 900,000, with about 48,000 followers before reading. Michelle Obama posted on his Facebook account, “Amanda, I hope you will continue to shine,” and Oprah Winfrey also posted “I am proud of another young woman.

Gorman won the first American Young Poet Award in 2017 when he was a teenager and studied sociology at Harvard University. Before reading the poem, he has a reason to introduce himself as “a descendant of a slave.” He is also an activist for racism and feminism. “I don’t want to be trapped by the prejudice of small people.” In 2036 he is 37 years old.

Gorman and Biden look alike. This is because he overcame the obstacle to stuttering in his childhood. In an interview with the New York Times (NYT), which was published on the day of his inauguration, Gorman said, “I stuttered because I was deaf as a child. However, Gorman overcame the difficulties with constant practice and read his poems.

Writing talent is a blessing found in the process of overcoming obstacles. Gorman said in an interview with the Washington Post (WP) last year, “I focused on writing because it was difficult to speak. It is said that it was Mrs. Jill Biden who recommended this Gorman.

Writing a congratulatory poem wasn’t easy even for a strong 22 year old. The message of integration was presented by Biden, and Gorman told NYT that at first he thought it would be easy. However, it is said that even after a few days and a few days, a single line could not be written. Gorman told NYT that “the pressure to write good writing was too strong.”

Then on the 6th, a congressional riot broke out. Gorman’s fingers began to dance on the keyboard as protesters occupied the parliament, shattered windows and roared, and police were sacrificed. He is said to have completed the poem by staying up that night. Some of them are as follows. In the original English text, it is a masterpiece that makes full use of rhyme.

“We saw the power to tear the country apart without sharing the country together (omitted). But we also saw that democracy could stop for a moment, but it could not be defeated forever. (Omitted) When that day comes, we will walk without fear from the burning shadows. The new dawn will set ourselves free. There is always light. If we have the courage to see the light, and if we have the courage to be that light ourselves.”
